A Storytelling Initiative working with independent creatives across the African continent to contribute respectful and relatable visual stories from the continent. We work to take back and own our narrative by collaborating with creatives in their countries or regions. As a team of African creatives, we aim to challenge the long held stereotypes about our people - one image at a time. Because we are from the communities we photograph, our understanding of the culture and the people reflects in the stories we create. We advocate for fair working conditions and are bridging the gap between local talent on the ground and clients elsewhere and this connection results in intimate, dignified storytelling. Meet the Team
Esther Mbabazi
Based in Kampala, Uganda, Esther Mbabazi uses storytelling and photojournalism to explore changing conditions on the African continent, with a focus on the social, economic, physical, and emotional aspects of daily life. She is a National Geographic Explorer, Magnum Foundation Photography and Social Justice Fellow and Everyday Africa contributor. Her work has been supported by institutions like National Geographic Society, IWMF, Pulitzer Center, and also published in the New York Times, National Geographic, Time magazine, the Wall Street Journal, and has been commissioned by a variety of NGOs.
Cynthia Matonhodze
An independent documentary photographer, sometimes photojournalist and videographer currently based in Harare, Zimbabwe. The focus of her work, since she began photographing in 2012, has been human rights and social issues mostly in her native country, Zimbabwe.A holder of a Honours degree in English Literature from the University of Zimbabwe and a Photojournalism and documentary photography qualification from the Market Photo Workshop in South Africa, In 2013, she was shortlisted for the ZimRights Human Rights Journalist of the Year Award for a portrait documentary story on a local power utility’s negligence that has cost people their lives and have left others permanently disabled.In 2016, she participated in the first World Press Photo Foundation East Africa Masterclass.She is a founding member of the Zimbabwe Association of Female Photographers, a member of Women Photograph, a Magnum Foundation Social Justice Fellow and a contributor at @everydayzimbabwe
